Help - gas in my oil - need advice!!!

I just bought a 51' Ferguson TO20 that has gas in the oil. I'm not exactly motor savvy, obviously, but now that I have it, how bad of a problem is this? What possibilities could cause gas being in the oil? What kind of damage can this do (could have done) to the engine, mine could have been this way a while. Also, my plugs were fouled badly (which I've replaced), the plug wires were car wires (like 2 feet long and tied in knots) which I have replaced and I don't think all cylinders are working. I haven't put a compression gage on it yet, but I will. Could the gas in the oil be related to bad rings? Should I try to fix the tractor or sell it? Any and all advice welcomed.
