The piece of wood you refer to at the end of the cutter bar is called a grass board. These can be made from either wood or metal. The piece of wood that driveves the cutter bar is called the pitman wood. If you have the model number of your mower, both parts are readily obtainable from your dealer, or I know the Tractor Supply Stores TSC in my area carry them both.
