Mark, I know what you mean, my old JD A will start on the first round, but my chalmers was headed for the compost site because of hard starting before I learned how to start it. First I replaced plugs, points, (set to the right gaps)and the correct timing, rotor and cap, new plug wires, and rebuilt the carb. It too was 6volt, and had the newer 12 volt cables, changed them to. It would flood if I gave it more than 1/4 throttle with any choke. Found that if I gave it just a little throttle, pulled the choke out while the engine was cranking, and pushed it right back, it would fire right up evertime. got to liking the little orange raskle. If you know the tractor is tuned right, try different starting patterns, more throttle less choke, no choke, you get the point. Once you get it right youv'e got a good tractor. hope this helps.
