Good information on how to determine which is the sense wire and which is the exciter wire on an unknown internal regulator alternator. Sometimes when the exciter wire is connected to the same terminal as the ign coil the alternator will backfeed enough power to the ign coil to keep the tractor running. you can block this backfeed with a diode, or a 10 ohm 1 amp resistor or a generator light(exposed or hidden)in series with the exciter wire. The resistor or gen light do not block the backfeed, but limit it to a low enough level that it will not power thr ign system. Another method is to connect the exciter wire through an oil pressure switch to the battery to avoid involving the ign system. I think this is what is used, as hooking to the oil guage sender will mess up the operation of the electric oil guage.
