Although this was not my first house , it's not that hard. Don't scrimp on the thickness, there are different grades The siding is the cheap part, all the accessories are the parts that cost. There are more than 1 width of J channel , get the one that fits your siding. When applying the siding the starter strip must be straight. It should be level, but straight is more important. I would put half inch Tuff R 4x8 on after removing all the old siding. This helps it expand and contract if you can't get the nails just right and also gives extra insulation. There is a special one for use under vinyl sidng doesn't cost any more than the nice shiny aluminum foil coated one which reflects the sun's heat back into the siding.
