Generic Oil Pressure

Silly question of the day. What should an Oil pressure gauge do?
Start high (At the regulator set pressure and then drop as the engine warms to operating temp? How far can or should it drop? In a tight engine? Worn engine? Engine temp dependant? I've seen the oil pressure in a Corvette pulsate at idle (right before the engine blew!). What experience out there? Pete in Post Falls
