once saw a tractor that had a 45 gallon barrel filled with concrete on the 3pth for weight. He had a bar going through the barrel for the bottom links to atach to and fashioned a hook up for the top link, Its cheap and easy to make, if you don't have concrete, fill it with sand.

As for chains, just your basic tractor chains will do once you have some weight. unless you have a fwd tractor and are climbing up and down steep hills pulling 40 ft logs, then go heavy duty.
