I am running a home built desktop since 2006 with out any major problems. running xp home edition, I built it myself. April of this year.I also have ab acer laptop since emachines use the worst power supplys, they go out and usually take the motherboard and cpu with them. If you replace the power supply they should be alright but they do not have the horsepower for a gamer machine. I have seen several old hp machines still in use, compaq is owned be hp. most computers you buy have a lot of bloatware on them. I am using avg free for antivirus, open office in place of microsoft office, both are free. good luck on your purchase, I hope this helps.
