I'm in the mood for a new computer, my 5 year old dell has been a lot of trouble and expense since new. There warranty is useless and customer service even worse. What would be a good brand to buy? I don't use it for bookwork or records, just tractor stuff and ebay.I wonder if those E machines walmart sells are any good.

I bought a inexpensive Acer lap-top from Wal-Mart that seems to work OK. 325.00. It seems that with any computer they are obsolete as soon as you go out the door so no use spending more then you have to.
Dell was a good name but I got tired of trying to understand some person from another country try to speak English to help me and they just can't do it.
Another alternative is find a reputable small computer shop and have them build one for you. This can be done reasonable and at least you will be able to get eye to eye with the fellow that is supposed to back what he sells if you have problems.

I have not built any for some years so can not say. Would just say that when you buy one, it will most likly have Win XP or Vista on it. Make sure that they give you a coupon good for an upgrade to Window 7. Worth about 120 dollars. I don't like Vista but Win 7 looks good to me. I Am running a pre-release of it.

win Xp or Vista on ir.

I have my 3rd E Machine and they have been vurtully trouble free since I got them. I had one blow its power unit once a simple repair.

Pretty much the same as Dell or Gateway, or HP. Some guy or girl in India. I bought at best buy, got a service contract, expensive, but I just take it in, they fix it. Haven't needed it on my Toshiba, wifes Gateway died twice, took one day the first time, 9 days the second. Both laptops, wouldn't get a desktop unit now.

I've had good luck with Dell for the past 5 years. Other than for the flat screen monitors. The electronic off/on switch went out on two monitors, making then virtually worthless, unless you have an electronics background, and can repair them.. Not worth repairing at a computer repair service.

Ditto on the laptop. Desk tops are just a waste of space unless you are some kind of gamer. Today's laptop use less power, can be taken to the shop if needed (add a wireless router and you take the net with you), and almost unlimited HD space using external drives.

Like was stated earlier Don't need nothing fancy, Hit youtube once in a while, email, and down load tractor manuals. Can't build a box for the cost of an Acer and you still have to buy a monitor.........

As far as Wal-Mart customer service goes, all they need to do is find the key to the cabinet. Acer handles any component issues, Microsoft handles the software issues, All I need to know is how to reload XP every time it locks up.

I have had my e machine for about a year. No major problems. Keep it out in my storage/office barn. Seems kind of slow when it is cold, but so am I until the barn warms up.

Well i am not a guru on computers that is a fact and my computer here is a home built one made by my brother and i can tell you this DON'T have him build one for you as if you think ya got problems now you ain't see nothing yet . Mine is a lenox system thru Unbuntu thru firefox and you talk about problems it is one big nightmare . What we have had to go thru to even get on a IM was three days and i mean Days of messing around can not get on a voice to voice chat let lone any video can't do this can't do that but i do not get viruses
. And if something does go down it takes boy genius a better part of a day to get it working again

Microsoft has a new system that is going on the market in a month or two. The upgrade from XP to the new system is going to be a "nightmare", and it is adviced that the consumer go out and buy a new computer with it already installed.
Can you wait that long?

Vet,

Therein is the problem with Linux for the average user: you need to be fairly knowledgeable to configure and maintain a Linux machine. Which is not to say that it's simple to keep a Windows machine running, but at least you're not on your own if there's a problem. For this reason, even though I despise Microsoft products as both a consumer and user, I don't recommend that the typical user make the switch to Linux.

I've been running Linux exclusively at home for almost 15 years, by the way.

We bought this last computer from Sam's Club.
Its a Compaq Pressario. We have an old HP in the basement that still works fine. Hal PS: The Compaq came with speakers & new monitor too.

I have both a Compaq Presario and an EMachine desktop. The Compaq originally came with Windows Me and I upgraded it to XP Home. The Emachine came with XP Home. I've had good luck with both of them so far as the Compaq is still going strong . Just a little slow since it is old.

I'll say it again..In Oct MS windows 7 comes out. Most new computers come with XP or Vista and a coupon good for the upgrade. make sure you get a coupon for the upgrade so you don't have to buy it in Oct. Personal opinion;XP=OK, Vista stinks, Win 7 the best yet from MS.

had 2 Dells in the last 12 yrs no problems at all ..paid for a Planar monitor have had it with both Dells and no problems...just my opinion..Charles

I am running a home built desktop since 2006 with out any major problems. running xp home edition, I built it myself. April of this year.I also have ab acer laptop since emachines use the worst power supplys, they go out and usually take the motherboard and cpu with them. If you replace the power supply they should be alright but they do not have the horsepower for a gamer machine. I have seen several old hp machines still in use, compaq is owned be hp. most computers you buy have a lot of bloatware on them. I am using avg free for antivirus, open office in place of microsoft office, both are free. good luck on your purchase, I hope this helps.

I am on my 2nd homebuilt made by my son and use XP pro, 2 hard drives, and an AMD processor which I think is great. Into my 4th year with this one. Also use Mozilla firefox. Everytime some uses Int explorer I have to straighten the computer out. Henry

I build my own, using parts from vendors that have proven reliable in the past. I have ten-year-old machines (and older) that still work well but are obsolete. There are people who custom build computers almost anywhere you go. It will cost more than a Wally World special though.

If you want a store-bought machine then buy the eMachines computer and make sure you get the "new Windows" free upgrade coupon with it. Replace the power supply immediately.
