How to Pull Safely?

As a part time tractor operator around my property I am very interested in safety. How can I set up my Super A to pull stuff like skidding logs out of the woods and be assured it cannot wheelie flip?
I'd like to know it will just stall out or spin wheels if the load is too much. I know that pulling from a point below the axle (drawbar) is best. I've also heard a long drawbar extending backward helps because the lever action works against a rising front.
At tractor pulls I've seen the front rise about a foot or so and seemingly reach equilibrium with no real concern by the operator.
Could someone explain the mechanics of all this to me to help me make a safer setup?
