Try this one out. The wife got a check in the mail the other day for just short of $4000. Said it was the down payment on a $100,000 prize from Publishers Clearinghouse or some online signup crap. Didn't say for sure, just one or the other. Had a Canadian stamp, was drawn on a New York Bank. I've read that check six ways from Sunday trying to figure out the catch. Looks like a good check. Only thing that the enclosed letter says is to call a certain phone number before you cash it to get instructions. I told her they'd want her account number so they could raid it. She said she was going to call anyway to see what the scam was. All the guy did was ask for her phone number and said he'd call her back after he checked her file. It's been 2 days and no call back. We know it's gotta be a scam, but darned if I know why they only wanted our phone number. They could have gotten that anywhere?
