Diesel vs. Gas

Why is the diesel engine noisier than a gas combustion engine? Diesel fuel is injected into the cylinder which had the air compressed at about 17:1 by the piston and the resulting heated air fires. With the gas engine, gas & air are compressed at 7.5: 1 and a spark plug fires the cylinder. After that, the cam, crank, piston, rods, etc. part of the engines are the same ( I thought). What makes the noise? I need an education.Thanks.
