Maybe my thinking is wrong but a clutch is engaged when traveling or against the fly wheel. A bad throw out bearing will make a noise when engaged if there is no free travel as well as when the clutch is desengaged. It can get bad enough it will rattle all the time in or out. When I have had pilot bearing or bushing make sound was when traveling. As Old said maybe it just needs greased. "I guess a throwout bearing replacement basically means a clutch job, right?" You have to tear apart just like you would do for a clutch job.
