Used to do Triumph (Spitfire and GT6) guides all the time- had a small non-hydralic press. Punching the old out I just whacked 'em with a punch-wasn't worried about tearing up the old. Before pressing them in, I'd stick the head in mom's oven for a half hour or so, and I stick the guides in the freezer for a while- some guys told me to grease them, others told me not to, I never did. If you could do VW heads, you'll be a-ok with an iron head...it was pretty easy to bugger up the VW exhaust guides, particularly if you were installing a storter guide to improve flow.
