Many moons ago I used to work on a lot of VW heads. Air cooled motors are tough on exhaust guides, so I found myself removing and replacing lots of valve guides. They were silicon bronze guides in aluminum heads. I tapped one end and inserted a set screw, then using a properly sized punch just hammered them out. How tough is it to remove and replace cast iron guides in a cast iron head? The machine shop wants $80 to replace 8 guides, not including the cost of the guides. The valves on this head are straight up, no tricky angles or fixtures required.
