When you say the word "ground" I wonder if youre mixing up or mixin n matchin an equipment ground conductor (often green or bare, a groundING conductor) and a Neutral conductor (often White, a groundED conductor). In your main service entrance the Neutral Buss (where all the white neutrals attach) and the Equipment Ground Buss (where all the bare or greens atatch) are bonded together unless you just have one common Buss where alllllll the white Neutrals and all the Bare/Green equipment grounds attach.
A what you call a "line" out to the barn suitable for 110 volt service, would rightfulyl consist of: 1) A Black HOT phase wire,,,,,, 2) A White Neutral (a groundED conductor),,,,,,,,,3) A Green/Bare Equipment GroundING Conductor. Then at the barn there should be an "earth ground" (driven ground rods etc) and, of course, that sub panel (or whatever you have at barn) will NOT have the Neutral bonded to the Equipment Ground such as was done at the main service entrance.
Im afraid you could have a bad or open Neutral and/or youre trying to use mother earth as the current return path somewhere in this configuration!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DO NOT ALLOW ANY LOOSE OR OPEN NEUTRALS. I would check all connections especially where Neutrals are concerned and look for loose or burned or otherwise poor contact.
I hope you are running 3 (i.e. Hot, Neutral, Ground, NOT just 2) wires out to the barn ?????
Again, check all wiring connections ESPECIALLY the Neutrals and if youre not familiar with wiring ID HIRE A PROFESSIONAL because saving a life and/or avoiding a fire is sure worth his expense.
