Article Archive,Step-by-step 12V conv

I have 2 questions concerning this board's
article archive, Step-by-Step 12 Volt Conversion
topic.
The diagram shows 1 and 2 poles on the
S10 alternator. I have a delco-remy DR5MF I would like to use instead. It has 4 terminals GRND,BAT,F,R. So I assume F,R is the equivalent of 1 and 2 in the diagram.
Is 1 = "F" and 2 = "R" or is that the opposite.?
Also I am running straight off the battery, as
a consequence I have to recharge the battery after
every use. The alternator is belted but no
connections are made yet. My 12 Volt battery works fine so do I still need a balast resistor as the coil seems to work fine on 12 Volt without one?.
It could be a 12 Volt coil but can't say for sure.
