What you describe happens. It's probably illegal in most states but nearly impossible to prove. There's nothing wrong with an auctioneer taking absentee bids or reserve prices, but any time an auctioneer has to come down from a bid he claims to have is the time I leave. Someone else mentioned the trick of seeing several hands go up and taking them in quick succession to run the price up from a $1 bid to a $6 bid. You have the right to speak up and tell him youu were bidding at $1, not at $6; don't let them pull that trick. I like going to auctions and believe most auctioneers are honest, but there are a couple I just avoid. They usually don't stay in business long anyway.
