The rabies immunization no longer requires needles in the belly. I had it done a few years ago, and it was a few shots of immunoglobulin (purified anitbody) in the thigh to provide immediate protection, and then a series of killed virus injections in the arms to build up your own immunity over the following few weeks. But if you have handled any animal with signs of rabies that is not destroyed and tested, it is not worth the risk to not have the shots (and you have to have them quickly after contact). There has only been one documented case of someone surviving rabies that I am aware of, and that girl is severely brain damaged as a result of the disease.
