Try fresh clover and dandelion leaf for bait, thing is it has to be fresh. My lawn is full of both of those, and I've always wanted to get it back to all grass, but it seems it keeps the critters happy enough to mostly stay out of the gardens. This year I left a tray of plants on the ground, went to work and forgot, they only nailed the spring mix/lettuce greens, right to the nub, thankfully most came back and I can still enjoy some of it.
