Positive ground the distributor connects to positive on coil. Negative ground distributor connects to negative on coil.
I've encountered several cases of hard starting caused by coil being connected backwards. Coil is designed to be connected so that the ignition spark "spits" from the center electrode of the plug to the grounded tab. Reversing the coil will cause the plug to "suck" the spark from grounded tab to center electrode and can diminish the efficiency by a significant amount.
