Here in La we have what we call a brake tag. It is the same as a inspection sticker. While it is a list of things to check most only do the basics. The inspector is required to drive the vehicle into a bay so that gives him a brake test. Lights; wipers; horn; muffler for sound noise level; and windshield for cracks are checked. Use to be if you knew the guy you could get a sticker under any condition but they are cracking down on that. Another thing they have been trying to crack down on with little success is over tinted windows. Only one area (Baton Rouge) requires a smog test because that is the only city that failed its air quality test.
Cost is $10 ($18 if you need the smog test) per year. Cost use to be $5 and $5 if you needed headlight adjustment. Everyone complained place was saying they needed headlight adjustment every year even though headlights were not touched all year. So or great state changes it to $10 with free headlight adjustment. Yes you guessed it. No one ever needs headlight adjustments now. In fact it is hard to get the place even to check the alignment now.
Plates for trucks under 6000 lbs is $40 for 4 years. Plates for cars is based on selling price. Fee is .1% per year of selling price with a minimum of $20 for a 2 year tag.
