O/T Vehicle Safety Inspections

I have seen a few things mentioned about safety inspections of vehicles. What kind of things do they check for? Here in Calif. all we need to be worried about is the dreaded smog check every two years. Stan

Germans check pretty much every moving part. brake test machine, oil leaks, shocks/struts, rust, glass, exhaust, emissions, lights, hitch if it's got one, tires (have to match what is on the paperwork for that car and in good shape), first aid kit, warning triangle, and sharp edges (body damage).

Some of the East coasters I know get things like Brakes, emergency brakes, headlight aiming, ball joints, tie rod/suspension parts etc. tested. From what I hear, its a scan most of the time.. Shops want to fail you for something so they can make money off of you as they are inspected by local shops. If you slip the shop some extra money for your test they don't fail you for something.

Here in Arizona, no mechanical inspection.. Just emision testing through state run facilities. We don't have to worry about "having to" bribe someone to pass, unlike some friends I have in CA have to do.

Just smog here in Oregon
I remember Dad had to take the car thru the "Safety Lane?" check years ago in IL...lights (working, headlights trained properly), wipers, brakes (not always easy to pass in the days of mech brakes, but very important then). It was a real strict test; no sticker if you didn't pass. Don't recall anything about penalties, if any, etc., and while I never heard him comment on passing the inspectors a few $$$ he did say some were less strict with borderline cases than others.
Personally, think some sort of basic checks should be required.

All trucks including pickups in Illinois are checked every 6 months, but "no" cars, unless it would be a city thing.

Here in ohio the state patrol did random car
inspections along the highway till they figured out the people that owned cars that wouldn't pass the inspection didn't have the money to repair them anyhow or pay a fine.

I don't understand you people back there. I don't understand why you don't line the whole damn government of your state up and hold a firing squad and start over.

I suggest that 'safety' inspections are just another way to generate money. Some of the cities in TN require an annual inspection, but for us country folks, there's nothing. If your vehicle has (muliple) parts falling off, the Highway Patrol might pull you over or they'll 'get' you for missing head/tail/brake lights. Can't remember when I heard of an accident caused by a failure of vehicle components; it's always driver error. Know less than nothin' about smog..........

In Ga. any county with over 200,000 population has to do emission checks on gas vehicle over 3 years old and weigh less than 8500 lbs every year by your birthday or you can't renew your registration. 25 tears ago they tried the safety thing, what a crock.
My bil had a station, he sold the $3 stickers for $10 to anyone who did not want inspected.

No inspections in this part of AZ, and no emissions, either. I think the AZ emissions is only for vehicles around Phoenix and Tucson.

No inspections or emissions in ND, either.

I think a basic inspection should be performed - brake life, headlights, turn signals, emissions. Too many vehicles running around in this town with grinding/squealing brakes and missing headlights, tail lights or turn signals... not to mention the smoke belchers that could about kill someone following them!

Nova Scotia has an inspection sticker program and has since the 60's.
They check all lights, horn, wipers/washer, heater, tires, front end ball joints/suspension, chassis integrity, body (no holes) and brakes (service and parking).... and that involves a drum removal on vehicles with drum brakes.
I'm in the process of getting my truck ready for said inspection the first of the week as I just got fined yesterday for driving without a sticker... for the second time, by the same cop.
Next time won't be so funny...

It is a pain in the asteroids... but it was instituted at the time because there was a lot of junk on the road, and it would be worse today without it because there are a lot of people who wouldn't maintain a vehicle at all if they wern't forced to, and most don't know the difference anyway.
I'm just one of the ones that plays the odds from time to time... and drives without a sticker for a while until I get some little things fixed.

every 6 months???? that state IS ran by total crooks.

your governor was a real riot though. that was the funniest thing i ever heard.

Annual safety inspection in Pa, no emissions in rural counties.
It's part sham. I have an 89 plow truck that would be inspectable other than the rotten emissions stuff begin torn off.
Same thing took out my 76 CJ, so I have to go the classic license route with it.
It's comrade government's way of getting the old vehicles off the road, at your expense.

Wouldn't mind the inspection part..need to ADD the Insurance requirement...In Texas 40yrs ago you didn't get to renew your license plates unless you had a current saftey sticker proof of insurance AND proof that you paid you taxes!! Thought that was a GOOD idea!! Charles

All I can say is after reading all this, I am so glad to live in KY. Only thing you have to do to your car here is pay taxes on them every year and show proof of insurance when you do that. I have a 00 Chevy cavalier, 93 chevy K1500, and a 93 Ford one ton my taxes on the three this year gave me a good handfull of change back from a $100 bill.

Why in the world would anyone tolerate any level of gooberment inspecting their private property? They tried that in Kansas years ago but people just wouldn't tolerate it so they gave up pretty darned quickly. They can force me to purchase a tag so that I pay my share of the costs asociated with those things they must enforce, and they can force me to have insurance (which primarily protects me), but I would just beat anyone who thought they had a right to look under my hood or under my car.

Here in La we have what we call a brake tag. It is the same as a inspection sticker.
While it is a list of things to check most only do the basics.
The inspector is required to drive the vehicle into a bay so that gives him a brake test. Lights; wipers; horn; muffler for sound noise level; and windshield for cracks are checked.
Use to be if you knew the guy you could get a sticker under any condition but they are cracking down on that.
Another thing they have been trying to crack down on with little success is over tinted windows.
Only one area (Baton Rouge) requires a smog test because that is the only city that failed its air quality test.

Cost is $10 ($18 if you need the smog test) per year.
Cost use to be $5 and $5 if you needed headlight adjustment. Everyone complained place was saying they needed headlight adjustment every year even though headlights were not touched all year. So or great state changes it to $10 with free headlight adjustment. Yes you guessed it. No one ever needs headlight adjustments now. In fact it is hard to get the place even to check the alignment now.

Plates for trucks under 6000 lbs is $40 for 4 years.
Plates for cars is based on selling price. Fee is .1% per year of selling price with a minimum of $20 for a 2 year tag.

We do not have a yearly tax on vehicles.

North Carolina requires a safety inspection of all vehicles. 1996 and newer requires a emissions check in most counties. Now inspection is due the mounth the tags are due. No inspection-no tags. No pay taxes- no tags. DH

Here in MD they check everything involved in safety on your vehicle everytime the vehicle is
sold. If sold in MD it needs to be inspected before it can be retitled in MD. The inspection
includes brake pads, brake shoes, rotors, drums,
brake lines, wheel cylinders for leaks, master cylinder too. They alse inspect all your glass in the vehicle for cracks and if the side windows
work properly. They check your struts and shocks. They check the steering for being too loose like the tie rods. If anything needs to be repaired or replaced to fix any fault it has to be be done before you're issued the inspection
certificate. They measure the brake drums and rotors for being worn too thin. Tires are another
thing they inspect and if the tread is worn too thin you need to replace them. You need to keep a car in good mechanical shape if you plan on selling it, and the exhaust is another item they will check. It cost over $100.00 just for the inspection. You can have them do the repairs or do it yourself. I usually did the work myself. Then the vehicle needs to have any of problems that were found and are fixed needs to be reinspected by the same shop that did the original inspection. Brake caliphers are inspected too. I probably missed a few. They will look at the front tires to see if they're worn evenly or are wearing from being out of alignment. Hal

In my part of Penna. We have a gas cap test and the rest of the car is inspected top to bottom -front to back. Example, no grooves deeper than 15 thousands in the brake rotors, cracked outer covering of brake hoses, any glass that is scratched. These can fail a vehicle. And there are many more. I had an inspection station fail my car because of a worn serpentine
fan belt. I talked to a state garage inspection, inspecter and he told me that the belt is not part of the inspection. He said that this particular inspection station has done this before to people. I did get my money back.

Pulled into a Maryland weight station driving a 1 ton flat bed. Got a ticket for: no dot number, no name on truck, no log book, and expired health card. Cost me about $300.00. I hope to never go back to Maryland period. DH

Iowa had an inspecion law back in the seventies and into the beginning of the eighties but it was repealed. When I bought my Dodge pickup in 79 it had to be inspected even though it was brand new. Jim

In Texas, it depends on where you are. If in the big city such as Dallas, Houston, San Antonio then you get a smog check and safety inspection. I'm in the country, closest town has a population of 6K so we have no smog test. They check tires, brakes (drive the vehicle), all lights, exhaust, horn, wipers, gas or diesel cap (there is a pressure tester for the caps) and be sure the brake fluid is full. Once a year, cost for the diesel is less than 20 bucks. Same for the old gas farm truck. I have several antique autos, don't have to inspect them as I have antique tags on them. Also, you have to show proof of insurance to get the inspection. All the above is done in the big city as well as the treadmill test with the sensor pipe up the exhaust pipe and the cost if twice as much. If it doesn't pass the first time, you are given a window of time to make the repairs prior to re-inspection. Oh yea, and they also check window tint with a gauge. Better than the Highway Patrol guy checking it I guess. My windows in my diesel are all bubbled up and I can barely see out of them, but they pass. Go figure.

Pickup trucks were inspected at one time in Illinois. But that went away over 20 years ago. Cars were never, and are not now, inspected. Bigger trucks, those licensed for over 8000 lbs., are inspected every 6 months. Some cities may be different, I don't know.

Wonder who ckecks the safety of the 89 Chevy driven by the illegal mexican with no tags or insurance?

They force us to carry at least state minimum ins. up here in MO. before we can get tags. Inspection every two years.

so if everyone has insurance, why do I purchace uninsured motorist coverage?

Sorry for the rant.

Gene

Here in Illinois, they check brake pads, or travel of the slack adjusters on air brakes, all the lights, wipers, defroster fans if applicable, any leaks in exhaust system, make sure the exhaust pipe doesn't end some where under the vehicle, tire tread depth, matching tires on duals, tire wear. These are the things I can think of.

In Pa you'll be walking too. Private property or not, if you operate your private property on public property (any public road), it is subject to the rules that protect everyone using the public road. Including yourself.

South Carolina finally realized that the 3 dollar inspection was a joke, and cancelled the program.. 15 years ago, I think.. Most of the poor folks, that drove clunkers then, are now driving nice SUV's, so there are not many bad cars on the roads, here..

Maryland should be the richest state in the union.
They now have Keystone cops out near the Delaware
& MD state line looking for MD cars that may have purchased items in DE where there's no sales tax.

They stopped my nephew since he lives near the state line and was bringing a chair home that was repaired under warranty. He didn't tell them he had bought it new in DE. I bought a new Troy Bilt generator, but I covered it so you couldn't see what it was. Hal

Some time ago WA state had cops out by the WA/ ID border waiting for folks with "Indian" untaxed cigarettes. I don't remember the details, but it didn't last long. I think there may have "been a big stink"

(I'm not a smoker, but that's pretty low, even for WA)

A few years back we had a problem with Ohio Excise Police sitting
outside Indiana liquor stores, and then following cars with Ohio
plates until they crossed back into Ohio, and then stopping them
for bringing too much liquor into Ohio. Lawrenceburg finally
passed a law banning Out of State excise police from the city
limits.

No inspections what so ever in Ar. I can not imagine living in a state with those rediculously retarded inspections. Ok, Ks, Ne, Sd and Nd don't have auto inspections either.

Back when i got out of Army, and was buying up old cars, i couldn't possibly pay for state inspection stickers to get the vehicles back to my place, so i used the paper labels from cans of White House Canned milk!
They looked just like the State stickers from a distance, and i never got stopped for having one on the car or truck! Just lucky, i guess!

Uninsured motorist. One who fails to make a payment to his ins co.He drives with out ins coverage after cancellation .In Maine the ins co notifies the state of the condition.State trooper will come and remove your plates. This process can take time so you can have an accident with uninsured driver.

In Michigan, we had an emissions test years ago. Think it cost $5. But it was rescinded. As others have said, it's a scam and designed to make money for the state AND the repair facilities with little positive impact. Just another intrusion by government in our daily lives. As for safety, if a car REALLY is a danger on the roads, there are laws on the books that allow a cop to pull it over and even impound it.

Our socialist politicians and officials will continue to create more and more laws that are "for our own good" when it all it really does is build their empires and create jobs for their cronies.
