Some of the East coasters I know get things like Brakes, emergency brakes, headlight aiming, ball joints, tie rod/suspension parts etc. tested. From what I hear, its a scan most of the time.. Shops want to fail you for something so they can make money off of you as they are inspected by local shops. If you slip the shop some extra money for your test they don't fail you for something.
Here in Arizona, no mechanical inspection.. Just emision testing through state run facilities. We don't have to worry about "having to" bribe someone to pass, unlike some friends I have in CA have to do.
