You didn't tell us what you have but my 2606 has the shuttle tranny with forward & reverse. All mechanical with a lever on the left side of the tranny that moves a gear set on a separate shaft inside the tranny. If it has synchronizers, then they are worn out. Have to use clutch and stop. I get a little gear grind when I don't wait for the shaft to stop. The IT manual shows and explains it all.
When I got it a couple years ago, I asked on the farmall board about the grind and was told that one gear on the shaft can go bad. When I looked at the IT manual that came with it, low and behold a previous owner had written in a price above the gear in the illustration which was never disclosed to me. About an $800 gear.
