How does a reverser work?

Yeah...I know you pull the handle thingy back to reverse and shove it forward to go in that direction....but how does the mechanism work? Can a reverser be added to an existing transmission or is a reverser engineered into a specific transmission made for reverser operation? Thanks.

I would think it would have to be engineered for reverser capability.

My IH 2444 has the option engineered in, but does not have that option.

My father had a couple of JD crawlers with reverser's, the 440 was manual, never had it apart. The 350, on the other hand, was a much better dozer, but in cold weather if you did not thin the fluid it would blow the seal on the reverser pump, it being hydraulic. It was a simple system, two hydraulically operated clutches, one forward, and one reverse. I would assume the 440 was similar but operated manually. both systems had a different bell housing than one without a reverser so I think it would be a complicated conversion.

It can be done if your model tractor had one as an option other wise forget it cost way to much to modify the tractor.
A Reverser uses hydraulic clutches to shift between forward and reverse.

Our IH 544 has a shuttle transmission - forward and reverse in all 5 gears with reverse being about 20% faster than forward.

Not hydraulic or automatic, you have to use the clutch and come to a comlplete stop to shift it. From the diagrams I've seen, it looks like a planetary gearset.

You didn't tell us what you have but my 2606 has the shuttle tranny with forward & reverse. All mechanical with a lever on the left side of the tranny that moves a gear set on a separate shaft inside the tranny. If it has synchronizers, then they are worn out. Have to use clutch and stop. I get a little gear grind when I don't wait for the shaft to stop. The IT manual shows and explains it all.

When I got it a couple years ago, I asked on the farmall board about the grind and was told that one gear on the shaft can go bad. When I looked at the IT manual that came with it, low and behold a previous owner had written in a price above the gear in the illustration which was never disclosed to me. About an $800 gear.

my tractor is 2005 JD 5320. I seen a reverser offered for it on ebay. I have a 9 speed transmission. It was an $1800 option when I bought the tractor and so.....I passed.

Don't know about a green machine but with with an IH, I'd think it would be hard to just add one since the gearing is an integral part of the transmission. Because of the extra gears, it should be more expensive though when considered an option.

Not sure I can explain it. Try going to caseih.com and do a search for parts. Try a 606 or 656 or a similar model and look at the direction reverser. Basically coming off the clutch main shaft is a open cup with gears inside it at the end. The main shaft of the tranny has a gear(#1) attached to the shaft that this cupped gear slides over to engage it for going forward. Behind the gear #1 is a double gear (#2) that rides around the main shaft unattached. Slide the cup/reverser back further and the # 1 gear slides into the cup further and the gear at the end of the cup then engages gear #2. That spins gear #2 and the gear attached to it which then goes against another gear which goes back to yet another gear on the main shaft. The gearing assembly on the side makes the main shaft turn in reverse. All the main gears (first thru fifth) are then behind this part of the transmission towards the rear end.

I didn't explain it very well but call your dealer about it.
