My father had a couple of JD crawlers with reverser's, the 440 was manual, never had it apart. The 350, on the other hand,was a much better dozer, but in cold weather if you did not thin the fluid it would blow the seal on the reverser pump, it being hydraulic. It was a simple system, two hydraulically operated clutches, one forward, and one reverse. I would assume the 440 was similar but operated manually. both systems had a different bell housing than one without a reverser so I think it would be a complicated conversion.
