Fudd is right, but you don't have to preheat the metal. The thing is cast is so hard it's brittle and the hot part expanding and then contracting as it cools can cause it to crack. You can weld a short distance and let it cool then weld some more. However, It's probably best to heat it with your torch, since you have one, just make sure you heat a fairly large area.
