I've been thinking about our situation a lot lately (who hasn't), "how did we get here?" specifically. One thought keeps coming back to me:
From the baby boomers on we have wanted more, more, more. More than our parents. More than our neighbor. More stuff, if you're a consumer. More profit, if you're a businessman OR investor. More leisure time, if you're - well - most people. All this 'more' has a very real price.
When you see trillions of dollars being used to bail us out (and that's what it is - a bailout for all of us) - it's not because it's the wrong answer to a very 'recent' problem - this problem has been brewing for 50 years.
Everyone can grumble that our kids will pay the price - and you're right. But they were going to pay anyway. We were already stealing from them. All our excess has a price. It was just a matter of when do we pay. See what I'm saying?
