And AMP is an AMP, whether 6 or 12 V. However if it was a 6 V positive ground system and was converted to a 12V neg ground system the AMP meter leads might need to be reversed. Votlage is not an issue with the amp meter but polarity is.
To verify if your batter is charging read the voltage accross the battery terminals. If charging you should read around 14 volts with the engine running.
