The alt light should have one wire from the switch and the other from the #1 terminal on the alt. When the alt is not charging the alt light is grounded through the #1 terminal which makes it light when the ign is on,when the alt begins to charge the # 1 terminal goes from ground to + 12V so both alt light wires have 12V which makes the light go out. The problem may be with the one wire regulator. Try hooking the #2 wire in the alt plug to the bat connection on the alt rear. This would also let you use a std (not one wire) regulator although the one wire reg should work. The one wire reg manufacturer says you can do it this way and it will make the alternator kick in at lower rpm. Make sure the wire from the bat terminal on the alt rear goes directly to the bat( where the battery cable attaches)terminal on the starter.
