What the 5 speed in the F-150 has is a very poor set of ratios. First gear is 3.92:1, 2nd is 3:1. A good towing first gear would be 5 or 6:1 to match the total ratio of torque converter and 3:1 automatic transmission. The mid 80s four speed T-91 did have that 5.5:1 first gear ratio and it would pull alongside an automatic with the same rear axle ratio.
