I understand what you are saying, but I'll say this:

A great uncle of mine was pulling a broken branch off a tree. When he pulled, the whole tree came over, and knocked him off the seat. The wheel ground away onhis leg for a while. Well, he only had one leg left after they got him healed back up.

The best way to get stumps out is a long cable, longer than the tree is tall, and then pull as you describe.

Once the stump is short, it is difficult to get any leverage - tractor not built for jerking, and tree built to not budge. Some pop them upwards by running the chain over a large rim, and pulling the stump upwards - I'm sure someone describes that by now.

Pulling stumps is dangerous, but ok if you are careful. Use a strong enough & long enough chain or cable. If a cable breaks, it can come zinging towards you - fast. Deadly fast.
