I'll only address part of your questions: There are probably many reasons for Deere popularity, but the 2 cylinder sound is definitely a big part of it - it hooked me. Farmalls and Deeres both have quantity going for them, making parts easier to find. Both generate fierce loyalty among their fans, as do most of the brands. I would be interested in alternate opinions. I also agree with you on the rusty examples. Kind of refreshing to see an old tractor look like an old tractor. One guy at the Tx Smithville show had a JD-D with all new insides, but no paint. Works for me.
