Has it been converted to R-134 or Freeze 12?
Unless the conversion was done 100% correctly, with the right oil, these refrigerants do not carry lube as well as the old R-12/mineral oil combo, and the time has come when the compressor is grinding it's innards to death. Surprisingly, sometimes it takes a LONG time for the process to be finished.
One common scenario is Freeze 12, an azeotropic mixture of a fluorocarbon refrigerant (20%) and 80% R-134. The fluorocarbon refrigerant component helps carry oil through the system, and is more "leaky". When it's gone and only the R-134 component is left the compressor "dies" of lube failure even though there's still oil in it.
