A.C. compressor

Working up some wheat ground yesterday. a.c. compressor on 4230 JD started making a fast clicking/grinding sound. Still blows cold air. What could that be.

Might be the AC clutch bearing, don't run it too long, as it can ruin the compressor housing. Does it make the same noise with the compressor clutch turned off, or only when the compressor is pumping ?

I agree with clutch as possiable cause.A low refrigerant charge will short cycle compressor which sometimes makes unusual noise while still cooling.

I should have said low refrigerant is also a possiable cause.Bad clutch or clutch bearing would not be related to low refrigerant.Yes, low refrigerant would cause noise "only" while a-c is set to cool.

Has it been converted to R-134 or Freeze 12?

Unless the conversion was done 100% correctly, with the right oil, these refrigerants do not carry lube as well as the old R-12/mineral oil combo, and the time has come when the compressor is grinding it's innards to death. Surprisingly, sometimes it takes a LONG time for the process to be finished.

One common scenario is Freeze 12, an azeotropic mixture of a fluorocarbon refrigerant (20%) and 80% R-134. The fluorocarbon refrigerant component helps carry oil through the system, and is more "leaky". When it's gone and only the R-134 component is left the compressor "dies" of lube failure even though there's still oil in it.

Unless the 4230 has been $$$ updated (uncommon) with a pressure switch kit the compressor WON'T cycle with low refrigerant. It uses a thermal limiter fuse and/or a high temp cutout on the condensor.

What does the pressure switch kit do for you. I have a 4230 and I can"t seem to keep the ac running . I keep blowing the light plastic fuse down near the compressor. Didn"t even know there was a fuse until jd dealer recharged and leak tested it . Ran fine for about a week and started blowing fuses. TYPICAL !!.
