Plowing question

I,ve got a small 1/2 field that once was used for a garden. It's been kept bushoged. Its been about 7 yrs since it was plowed or worked up until last year.Last year I plowed it in late fall thats when I got my frist tractor.And plowed and disced once again in sping.By the first of summer the dirt is hard as a rock and still is now.Did I do something wrong when plowing?Or is it where it had't been worked with in years?Is there any tips on keeping dirt from getting this hard?
