Bought a 98 Dodge w/Cummins 24 valve a little over a year ago. It has in the area of 300,000 miles. Speedo didn't work for a couple of years so it's an educated guess. Fuel gauge sender didn't work for a year before I bought it and it was run out of fuel several times.
Took it to a reputable repair shop a week ago to have the sender replaced. They replaced it, called me to say it was done, so I got it, started it up and took off but the computer had gone into the 'limp home' mode, wouldn't go above about 1000 RPM's, so I drove it around the block and back to the shop. They said they test drove it a few miles after they got it together and it ran fine.
He plugged his hand-held into it and if I remember right it said something about pump timing. He also checked the lift pump pressure. Next morn after he had made a few calls he said the inj pump was bad. I kind of suspect running it out of fuel a few times accelerated the wear a bit. What do you think? It had a re-built pump already. He told me what a re-built pump costs and they sure don't give them away!Jim
