i am not that familiar with 61, but 27 from westby to black river falls is fairly straight, and there are some hills.
i would suggest hwy 35 to lacrosse and then 53 to 93 north. hwy 93 is the quickest way from eau clair area to lacrosse, and is usually the way i take when going to lacrosse from eau claire. once you get to eau clair, take 94 east to the 53 by pass to pass around eau claire from there you can get on 29 east or west or more north to chippewa falls or beyond.
