Are you running a resistor bypass to the distributor from the starter circuit or from the ignition circuit? It should be from the starter circuit.
It should be run from the starter circuit to bypass the resistor only when cranking the engine. If you run a resistor by pass from the ignition switch you will have 12 volts going to the coil & point at all times thus not even using the resistor.
