Try this one, has saved my info I didn't want to loose numerous times. Insert your XP disc and start the computer. Go through the steps as if you were going to re-install XP. You will reach a window that will ask if you want to install new or repair (not the one for the "repair consule", past that one). Click "repair" the installation and let it go. You will have to re-install all of your updates, but it will return Windows to its' original condition without removing all of your files and programs you have installed since. Install your anti-virus and run scans before doing any updates or going online. After you clean out the junk, start your updates. Has worked for me almost every time I've used this method. Good luck!
