Mark, the situation you describe is perfect for 10W-30 oil. In fact, I use it or 5W-30 (where indicated) in everything I own; tractors, automobiles, trucks, even lawnmowers, the log splitter and tiller. I would NOT run 40 weight. Oil that is too thick is MUCH more likely to damage your engine than oil that is the correct base weight. While thicker oil might result in more indicated oil pressure, the correct weight oil will flow into the bearings much more readily providing much better lubrication. You can never go wrong by following the manufacturers directions; if they say 10W in winter and 30W in summer then 10W-30 would be the correct choice.
