1000 RPM is more efficient on high-power, high-speed implements such as hammer mills and forage harvesters. For instance, the mill cylinder in my grinder/mixer turns at about 8000 RPM. More power will be lost gearing the 2800 RPM of the engine down to 540 RPM and then back up to 8000 RPM, than gearing down to 1000 and then back up.
