Pot metal is an old and meaningless term used to describe any metallic amalgam that can be heated in a "pot" (a foundry term that describes a heated vessel used to melt metal) and is then usually die cast. The amalgam varies with each foundry but might be based on zinc and tin. Pot metal is also called "white metal". It is very commonly found in carburetor castings, trim parts for automobiles, and jewelry. It can be repaired, even welded, though welding pot metal is best left to the experts. Because pot metal is usually used for parts that don't require significant strength, repair with allumalloy and even epoxy is easy and makes a satisfactory repair.
