The Ford/Ferguson/Dearborn two row 3 pt hitch jobs were pretty useful for what you're describing. Typically there was a guide rod hung off the front axle on usually the right side to maintain alignment over the row. For emerging crops sometimes shields would be placed next to the shovels immediately next to the rows. The big advantage is that it's quick to get the cultivator on and off the tractor. The big disadvantage is that you have to get used to looking forward while the machine is behind you. But it works fine once you get everything lined up properly.
