Now days with all the concern I will HOLD a vehicle with a check but only release it and its paperwork with CASH. Never have questions come up or problems that way. I write a bill of sale stating AS IS and exchange that for a check when the deal is made. When the new owner shows up with cash I sign the title, return the uncashed check and give them the keys. No one has ever complained much.
