Oil mist coming out small hole in engine block on TO-30

I am helping friend fix a 1951 TO-30 Ferguson.
There is a small hole(about 1/8") on the left side of the engine block, about 1/2 way back, just below the head gasket that spews oil! For the life of me I cant figure out why it is there. The engine has a draft tube on the valve cover so venting should be OK. I am tempted to thread it and plug it with a screw. Anyone know what it was for?
