The Ford Select-o-Speed is a multible ratio transmission with planetary gears, clutch bands and hydraulic multi-disk clutches. More like the old Hydra-Matic than hydrostatic. As for hydro's they can be very rugged and desireable in shuttle and low load transport applications. High/heavy loads will, after a time tend to overheat the oil and result in failure. All Hydro's have an ultimate pressure limit that has been set by the factory to prevent the transmission from blowing its self up and that sets the limit of the torque that the trans can deliver.
