Typical hydro transmission consists of a variable displacement hydraulic pump (driven by the engine), and a fixed displacement hyd motor attached to the final drive. The operator controls ground speed by setting the transmission "speed" lever. This in turn varies the pump displacement, hence the fixed displacement hyd motor speed and ultimately the tractor ground speed. Some advantages: Infinitely variable speed control, ability to change ratio under load, clutchless reversing on some designs. Disadvantages include first cost, fuel economy (figure 20% or so penalty over the same machine with gear drive) and repair cost. Properly designed, operated and maintained hydro transmissions can be as reliable as a conventional transmission. Some however don't well under hard use (early Ford Select-o-speed).
