One coil is the cutout relay and the other may be both a voltage and a current driven controller. Look to see if it has both a small wire winding (voltage) and a fewer turns larger wire winding (amps). The knob probably sets the voltage output level. In order to charge a battery you must have about 15% more voltage out of the source than the battery would normally have. For 6 volt (really 6.3) that would be about 7.2 and with 12 volt (really 12.6) it is about 14.4. More tha 15% charges more quickly but is tougher on the battery. Hope this helps Lew
